Northrop Grumman Corporation introduced its new 'weapon-class' high power solid-state laser erlier in 2008. The new laser dubbed 'Firestrike' is designed as a ruggedized, line replaceable unit (LRU) for battlefield applications. Several Firestrike units can be stacked to reach power levels around 100kW, considered as baseline for weapon-class laser. Despite our scepticizm about the maturity of directed energy weapons, we believe that once this modular, scalable family of lasers establishes a credible, field-deployable direccted-energy weapon, with power sources and reliability that the warfighter can trust, the sky is the limit for more weaponized applications…
