Chennai (India) based Ashok Leyland Defence Systems Ltd. (ALDS) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG from Munich (Germany) have concluded a Memorandum of Understanding during the IDEX defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi to co-operate in the development of advanced defense systems for the Indian Defense establishment, as well as other defense forces worldwide. Diehl, Al Jaber Establish JV to Pursue Military Vehicle Upgrades in the UAE
Al Jaber Group of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the German company Diehl Defence have signed a joint venture for the modernization and upgrade of the Emirates’ military land vehicles. As part of this cooperation Diehl will supply components and upgrade kits including propulsion packs, suspension and tracks and assume system responsibility for vehicle upgrading to be performed by UAE personnel at Al Jaber Group facilities. U.S. Army Orders 21,000 Thermal Sights from Three U.S. Suppliers
The U.S. Army is ordering 21,877 Thermal Weapon Sights at an investment of about $195 million. AN/PAS-13 According to the U.S. Army Program Executive Office PEO Soldier, Thermal Weapon Sights (TWS) gives Soldiers with individual and crew served weapons the capability to see deep into the battlefield, increase surveillance and target acquisition range, and penetrate obscurants, day or night. FELIN Soldier Systems Enter Service with the French Army
The 1st Infantry Regiment, the oldest unit in the French Army, is also the first unit in Europe to implement a full digitized soldier system for dismounted combat. During the past six weeks the regiment went through an extensive technical orientation process, evaluating the system in direct assault drills, urban combat, stealthy advance in a dark building, offensive reconnaissance, neutralization of hidden enemies, site protection from an observation post. This phase is now followed by the integration of FELIN systems into the regiment’s tactical plans and deployment in foreign theaters scheduled by the end of 2011. Sagem Defense & Security, the prime contractor ans system integrator of FELIN completed the delivery of some 1,000 Felin sets in early September 2010. (Read More...)
Oshkosh Unveils Its Prototype For Canda’s TAPV Program
Oshkosh Defense unveiled its prototype for Canada’s Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle (TAPV) program, as well as the company’s plans to work with its subsidiary, London Machinery, Inc. BAE Systems to Modernize Bradley Vehicles through $47 Million Contract
BAE Systems recently received a $47 million contract modification to modernize 95 M2/M3 Bradley armored vehicles, through the reset process – replacing old and damaged components with updated equipment and technology. Under this contract, the Bradley vehicles will be reset and converted from the Bradley Operation Desert Storm (ODS) model to the Bradley Operation Desert Storm Situational Awareness (ODS SA) configuration.(Read More...)

BAE Systems, Land Systems South Africa will produce survivability and mobility upgrades kits for the RG31 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehiclesunder an order received from General Dynamics Land Systems Canada (GDLS-C), as part of the teaming agreement between the two companies. Switzerland Transfers 12 Leopard 2s to Canada
Implementing the Armed Forces 95 and Armed Forces XXI programs, Switzerland is phasing out some of its heavy armor units. As part of this program Bern will transfer 12 Leopard 2 main battle tanks (Pz 87 Leo) to Canada. More of of the Swiss Pz 87 Leo fleet was therefore mothballed at various storage sites. More CROWS II Weapon Stations for the U.S. Army
The U.S. Army is increasing the number of Common Remotely Operated Weapon Stations (CROWS II) bought from Norwegian arms manufacturer Kongsberg Defence. The Army awarded the company additional $120 million on February 9, 2011, effectively increasing the maximum quantity of from 10,349 units to 11,690 units, to be delivered by August 2012, five years after the Norwegian company was selected to supply CROWS II systems under a five-year framework agreement. RADA Unveils New Configuration of Threat Warning Radar for AFV
Rada unveiled a new version of its threat warning radar, optimized for active protection systems for armored vehicles. The radar was designed with a flat configuration, which was found to better conform with side mounted installations on main battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. (Read More...)

DARPA Challenge Aims at a new Breed of Light Armed Scouts
RPA has announced a new ‘challenge’ for the development of a concept vehicle utilizing flexible and innovative manufacturing, enabling the military to rapidly adapt to changing battlefield requirements. Past DARPA challenges addressed autonomous mobility in open and urban terrain, development of armor protection systems and the development of lean manufacturing technologies.
