Despite Test Range Success – Iron Dome Is Not Operational Yet
The Israel Air Force’s first Iron Dome counter Rocket, Artillery and Missile (C-RAM) system has passed a significant milestone last week, with the first Iron Dome battalion performing successful, intercepts of multiple targets simulating five different operational scenarios of threats fired at different trajectories and ranges. Following the successful induction process, the Iron-Dome battalion is expected to be announced operationally ready within the upcoming weeks – several months after the scheduled deployment plan. Advanced Arrow-2 Intercepts Shihab III Surrogate Target over the Pacific Ocean
The joint U.S.-Israel Arrow Weapon System successfully intercepted a ballistic target missile today, during a flight test conducted over the Pacific Ocean. The test was part of the Arrow System Improvement Program (ASIP), conducted jointly by the Israel Missile Defense Organization and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. (Read More...)
MBDA Introduces a Multi-Layered, Tactical Air Defense System
MBDA has unveiled an integrated air-defense system combining the Short-Range Air Defense Mistral and VL MICA missiles. The two systems are controlled from a unified, Improved Missile Control Post (IMCP) which integrates, both system’s command and control within a single shelter. According to MBDA, the new integrated system has already been selected by a first customer with first deliveries expected in 2014. (Read More...)

Third S-400 Regiment To Defend Russia’s Far East
Russia is beginning to deploy the third S-400 Triumph Air Defense Missile System with an air-defense regiment based in Russia’s Far-East. S-400 (NATO reporting name SA-21 Growler) was developed by the Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300PMU-3 air defense missile system. Development began in 1999 and the first unit was declared operational in 2007 – the first S-400 regiment stationed near the town of Elektrostal. The second unit has recently completed training at Kapustin Yar and is currently shipping equipment to its permanent base outside Dmitrov near Moscow. Pakistan Test Fires Nuclear-Capable Hatf-7 Cruise Missile
Pakistan successfully tested Hatf-VII nuclear-capable cruise missile which flew up to of a range of 600 km. The missile, also called Babur (after the 16th-century Muslim ruler, founder of the Mughal Empire) is designed to reach up to 750 km, fired from ground launchers, surface ships and, potentially, submarines. Man Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS) are commonly used to protect mobile, deployed forces, or defend point targets and strategic sites. Although technically capable to intercept combat aircraft and helicopters, human factors critical limit the use of MANPADS to very short range. (Read More...)
IAI, DRDO on Course to Integrate Barak-8 on the First Vessel in 2012
Test firing of the Barak 8 missile is expected this year. “Testing will be conducted in India and is part of the responsibilities of our strategic partner in this program, India’s Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO)” IAI officials told Defense-Update. The missile is on schedule to complete development and be integrated on board the first combat vessels by 2012. After being inducted into service, the system will continue development and phased improvement, toward its full operational capability phase. Barak 8 is designed to be fielded on both Israel and Indian Navy vessels.

Iranian Ballistic Missile Scores a Direct Hit on a Target Ship
Iran demonstrated today a new type of short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) based on the Fatah 110 platform, capable of hitting targets at a range of up to 250-300 km with high precision. During an operational demonstration the missile was fired at a target vessel floating in the Persian Gulf, scoring a direct hit. Accordingly, the new missile was named ‘Persian Gulf (Khalij Fars). Army Funds Additional $139 Million for HIMARS Rocket Systems
Lockheed Martin has received a $139.6 million contract to provide 44 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to the U.S. Army. This order will increase the Army’s HIMARS launcher fleet to 375, with deliveries continuing through January 2013. (Read More...)
