Britain Commits to Finance Three Test F-35B Joint Strike Fighters
On a visit to Washington, British Defence Secretary John Hutton announced the decision to purchase three Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) test aircraft, selected for the RAF and Royal Navy's next generation of supersonic stealth fast jets. This decision marks a significant milestone in the UK’s commitment to the Joint Strike Fighter project. The Short Take Off Vertical Landing (STOVL) capable F-35B will fly off the two new Royal Navy Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. The purchase of three test aircraft will enable MOD to move forward in developing the Carrier Strike capability.
Continue...According to Defence Secretary John Hutton, by purchasing three aircraft for testing, the U.K. will secure access to the development of the program. "This is a vital program for UK Defense both for the military and for industry, with over 100 UK companies involved in the program.” said Secretary Hutton. The STOVL capable F-35B is the aircraft of choice to fulfill MoD’s Joint Combat Aircraft requirement. The British Ministry of Defence is a partner in the JSF program and is investing £2Bn to develop the aircraft.
