Odyssey DawnNaval, Air Attacks Directed at Gaddafi’s Remaining Arsenal

U.S. Navy and Air Force units operating with Joint Task Force’ Odyssey Dawn’ fired at Libyan Navy and Coast Guards boats at the Bay of Misrata on Monday, Gaddafi’s loyalists were fighting rebels at the area. On Monday, U.S. Navy P-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft fired Maverick AGM-65F air-to-surface missiles at a Libyan patrol craft, after the 12-meter Libyan boat Vittoria was suspected of attacking merchant vessels in the port city of Misrata. The UN mandated operation against Libya has evolved in recent days into three parallel efforts – the enforcement of the ‘no fly zone’ over the country, ground attacks supporting and stimulating a rebel campaign repelling Gaddafi supporters, and a ‘drying’ Gaddafi’s military sustainment by enforcing a naval blockade, preventing reinforcements, weapons and ammunition shipments from reaching Libyan ports. Following military pressure mounting with a third night of attack by the coalition, forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi were reported withdrawing from Benghazi. Shifting their pressure to the west on Tuesday, Gaddafi’s forces attacked two Libyan towns on the eastern border with Tunisia. Realizing that air strikes are not limited to air defense, but are now targeting mechanized formations near rebel concentrations, Libyan forces have taken alternative means of action, utilizing ‘urban guerilla’ type activities, by employing small dismounted formations and snipers to take out rebel targets.  (Read More...)

Naval Rafales Launch First Combat Mission over Libya

On Tuesday morning of March 22, early morning, the French aircraft carrier launched its first mission supporting operation Hartmattan, as Squadron 12E launched two of its Rafale F3 fighters on a four hour combat recce mission over Libya, with the fighters carrying air/air missiles and RECO NG reconnaissance pods, able to transfer aerial imagery in real-time to the combat operations center on the ship.
