Final Round for Brazil's F-X2 Fighter Competition

Recce Pods Improve Intelligence Gathering over Afghanistan

Following the successful completion of Initial Operational Capability (IOC) qualification of the Reccelite tactical aerial recce pods with the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe is now equipping Tornado IDS fighters with the system. To be equipped with the first two Reccelite pods, are Tornados of AG51 'Immelmann' Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. Recently deployed to join the rest of the squadron at Mazer e-Sharif airbase in northern Afghanistan, the aircraft will support USAF operations in-theater. (read more...)

20mm Cannons for Caracal Helicopters

DGA, the arms procurement agency of the French MOD is procuring 15 retractable gun pedestals and 25 cannons of the 20M61 type to equip the French Army's Cougar Caracal assault transport helicopters. This weapon is common to other helicopter platforms currently operational with the French Army and Air Force, including Gazelle, Puma and Fenec. The SH20 retractable pedestal enables the helicopter to operate in 'non aggressive' mode of operation, exposing its weapons only when operating in potentially hostile environment. The 20M61 has an effective range of 2000 meters, providing the helicopter crew effective threat suppression beyond the combat range of common threats such as machine guns and RPGs.

Light Attack Armed Reconnaissance Aircraft (LAAR)

The U.S. Air Force is considering introducing a new class of light attack and reconnaissance aircraft (LAAR), designed for low-intensity operations. Utilizing 'off the shelf' light platforms, the Air Force to Hawker Beechcraft Corporation (HBC) and Lockheed Martin have teamed to offer a light attack and reconnaissance aircraft to address an operational needs statement that could be released as an acquisition program in 2010. HBC will lead the tea as a prime contractor, with Lockheed Martin Systems Integration in Owego, NY, acting as mission systems integrator for the aircraft. The team will propose the Beechcraft T-6 aircraft, modified into the AT6 LAAR. This aircraft will have commonality with the current fleet of T6 trainers. (read more...)

U.S. Air Force Reactivates the 69th Nuclear Strike Bomb Squadron

The U.S. Air Force has reactivated the 69th Bomb Squadron this month. The new unit is the fourth operational B-52H Stratofortress squadron in the Air Force, and the second squadron operating from Minot Air Force Base along with the 23rd Bomb Squadron. Two B-52H squadrons are currently operating in Barksdale AFB, La., the 20th Bomb Squadron and the 96th Bomb Squadron. (read more...)

New Night Eyes for the Constant Hawk

BAE Systems has delivered the first Airborne, Wide Area Persistent Surveillance System (AWAPSS) to the U.S. Army, addressing an urgent need for improving persistent day-or-night situational awareness in complex operational environments. These surveillance systems will expand the current capabilities of Constant Hawk aerial surveillance aircraft operating in Iraq, detecting, identifying and tracking activities, suspected to be associated with prepartion, emplacement, or locations of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) or ambushes in complex, urban environments. Sofar these capabilities were limited to daytime operations. Beyond night performance, the new system will also improve automated target tracking capability and offer better target detection and identification, by employing multi-spectral imaging and supporting multi-user operation.
