Manned and unmanned aircraft equipped with omni-directional ‘Distributed Aperture System’ (DAS) imaging infrared systems could be used effectively to provide early warning on missile launches. The U.S. Navy is expecting proposals from industry for groundbreaking operational support services, employing unmanned helicopters as ‘Cargo-Unmanned Aerial Sy ATK is developing a lightweight precision guided munition, compact and light enough to be carried by the dozens or even hundreds by unmanned aerial aircraft. The new glide weapon is packed into a conformal container launcher carried under the wing of the Shadow, fitted on top of the strut root. Lockheed Martin VOSSLockheed Martin Gyrocam Wins Additional Order for VOSS

Lockheed Martin has received delivery orders totaling $138 million from the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command Acquisition Center for additional 200 Vehicle Optics Sensor Systems (VOSS). These delivery orders are new releases against a multi-year Indefinite Delivery-Indefinite Quantity contract awarded to Gyrocam in 2008. The company was acquired by Lockheed Martin in 2009. Namer APCGDLS Selected to develop Namer Armored Personal Carriers for Israel

Israel’s Defense Ministry has awarded General Dynamics a contract to build 600 Namer (leopard in Hebrew) armored personnel carriers (APC) over the next eight years.The competitive procurement process was for the production of Merkava APC hulls, material kit sets and integration of the kits to the vehicle chassis. General Dynamics expects to complete contract negotiations by the end of this year. (Read More...)

Among the heavier tactical vehicles on display were new versions of the BAE Systems’ Caiman Multi-Terrain Vehicle (MTV), configured to support Command and Control On-the-Move (C2OTM) assignments and ambulatory operations. Oshkosh displayed the latest reconnaissance version of the MRAP All Terrain Vehicle (MATV) . This vehicle carries crew of six plus gunner. ArmorWorks is introducing at AUSA an innovative 3D camouflage applique called TactiCam that has the potential to reduce vehicle signature in radar, infrared and visual spectrum.
The new material has already demonstrated effective signature reduction in tests and is undergoing optimization. The outer layer of the TactiCam material is shaped in randomly generated three-dimensional pattern displaying varying geometric shapes, in different depth levels. This digitally generated random pattern surface reflects energy from the vehicle in an irregular pattern, disrupting the detection of the vehicle by electro-optical and millimeter-wave radar sensors. The Gilboa employs the proven lower receiver of the M-16/M4 design, coupled with a new upper receiver designed by Silver Shadow. CAA Tactical displayed the new RONI shell kit at ISDEF 2010. Roni enables the conversion of standard handguns and pistols into an accurate carbine. With the new kit, standard targets can be engaged at 50-70 meters, as the kit significantly improves the shooter’s grip, accuracy and therefore, the probability of the shooters’ hitting the target at extended range. New Casualty Evacuation System Introduced by Easy Rescue

Easy Rescue unveiled their latest innovation in casualty rescue and evacuation, introducing a new method to transfer wounded persons from areas under engagement or where movement or access are challenged by terrain, design (narrow paths), man made or natural obstacles. An operational study of such system conducted by the IDF Home Front Command indicated that such system can contribute to personnel saving by a factor of 5 – 10, compared to evacuation techniques employing only stretchers and gurneys. New Super-Strong Fiber Designed to Meet Threats in Former-Soviet Markets

Composite fibers manufacturer DSM Dyneema unveiled today the SB51, a new fiber optimized for use in ballistic vests that combine minimum weight with high protection performance against handgun ammunition, fragments and knives. It was designed specifically to provide protection against the prevalent threats in Central and Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific, namely the 7.62x25mm Tokarevbullet, widely used in former Soviet states and neighboring countries as well as the Chinese P54 pistol ammunition. Elbit Systems to Upgrade Asian Tanks with BMS, Optronics

Elbit Systems Ltd. announced today that it was awarded an approximately $56 million tank upgrade contract from a customer in Asia. The tank upgrade project will span over 24 months and include the installation of battle management systems (BMS), and optronic observation and surveillance systems. Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) is modernizing the Canadian Leopard 2A4 CAN tanks previously acquired from Dutch Army surplus. The first batch of 20 tanks was handed back to the Canadian Armed Forces yesterday (October 7, 2010) at the Bergen training ground in northern Germany. The U.S. Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) is testing seven Active protection Systems, mostly from international vendors, to determine the maturity and potential of such systems, protecting U.S. forces against Rocket Propelled Grenades and other Anti-Armor weapons. The Active Protection Systems Live Fire Test and Evaluation effort, which was mandated by Congress in 2008 provides U.S. with comparative insight into potential defenses readily available to protect U.S. forces.
