Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) is developing a new Expendable Mine
Neutralization System (EMNS) for the Navy's Mine Counter Measures
(MCM-1) Avenger-class ships. The company was awarded $11 million
by the Navy for the System Development and Demonstration (SD&D)
phase. EMNS will be designed to protect carrier and expeditionary
strike groups For the Navy, and will greatly reduce the mine
detection-to- neutralization sequence time, improving mine countermeasure
mission effectiveness and reduce the amount of time Sailors
will have to operate in minefields. (More...)

EMNS will replace the existing AN/SLQ-48 Mine Neutralization
System (seen in the left picture) currently deployed on all
14 MCM-class ships (An MCM vessel is pictured below). The system
will be able to rapidly reacquire, target and neutralize moored
and sea-bottom mines. For this task the BAE Systems' Archerfish
mine disposal system will be used. Archerfish is a remotely-operated
underwater vehicle that locates mines using sonar, enabling
an operator to identify the mine using video and destroy the
mine on an operator command. Archerfish is common mine neutralizer
chosen for U.S. Navy's mission.
