U.S., Brazil Sign Security Pact

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim signed a new defense cooperation agreement April 12, 2010, formalizing the growing security partnership between the United States and Brazil. This accord will expand the two countries’ relationship to include research and development, logistics support, technology security, the acquisition of defense products and services and other industrial opportunities. The new agreement establishes the ground for the exchanges of operational experiences, defense technology and peacekeeping operations, and joint training activities. The new accord is seen a  last minute attempt by Washington to bend the Brazilian decision on the future FX-2 fighter, in which Brazil weighs the French Rafale and Swedish Gripen against the U.S. Super Hornet. Jobim said he expects to make a recommendation by the end of May. (more on the FX-2 program)
