Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) ceramic reinforced composites are already utilized for state of the art
aerospace applications. MMC have demonstrated ballistic performance of
lightweight ceramics, while approaching multi-hit capabilities of metal armor.
High Performance Materials Group (HPMG) is developing various processing
and applications of MMC armor, including combined light structures integrating
MMC and metals, which could offer strength and ballistic protection at reduced
weight, and weight reduction of MMC, by encapsulation of high performance
ceramics.
